Continuing Education Programme (CEP)

In order to provide service to the community and contribute towards the development of people, the Career Services Office at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has started the Continuing Education (Life Long Learning) Programme. LUMS Continuing Education Program (CEP) aims to offer opportunities for personal development to the general public. People, who could not pursue studies in their respective areas of interest will get the opportunity to do so, NOW. There is no requirement of a prior degree to enroll in the Continuing Education Programme; the only requirement is the participant's interest and true commitment to learning.

Arabic Language Course Outline
Course Description

This is an introductory language course for those without any background in the Arabic language. Arabic is one of the richest and oldest living languages of the world, spoken by nearly three hundred million people in approximately thirty countries in West Asia and North Africa. Because of its religious and cultural significance, it has been widely used in the whole Islamic world during the past fourteen hundred years. The Qur'an, ahadith (the Prophet's traditions) and a diverse and extremely rich body of religious writings in Arabic make the language particularly attractive to Muslims. On the other hand, the very elegance of Arabic literature that evolved during a long span of nearly fifteen hundred years makes it appealing to all those interested in comparative literature and history. Not only is Arabic one of the six major international languages used officially by the UNO, it is almost universally offered in most prestigious universities in the West as well as in universities in other parts of the world.
Because of the historical and cultural connections of Pakistan with the Near East and its close geographical proximity with the Arab world, Arabic has and continues to influence the life, regional histories and cultures of Pakistan. It is therefore especially significant for our students.

Course Objectives
  • To help student acquire basic skills in reading, writing and understanding Arabic.
  • ince Arabic vocabularies form a major component of Urdu and other regional languages of Pakistan, this course will greatly help students achieve further advancement in Urdu and other regional tongues.By the end of the course, students should have:
  • The ability to express simple ideas in Arabic in written, spoken and other communicative forms.
  • The ability to grasp basic Arabic grammar for academic use.
  • An acquaintance with correct Arabic pronunciation and vocalization.
  • A basic understanding of the fundamentals of academic Arabic.
  • A curiosity to explore further the linkage between Arabic and Urdu as well as regional languages of Pakistan.

Hareem Tanvir Profile

Hareem Tanvir graduated from the National College of Arts, Lahore Pakistan in 2004 with Painting as her major. February 2005, taught Drawing, Painting at Beaconhouse National University. Later, in 2007-2010 did Masters in Fine Arts, Painting, from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. During her stay in the U.S she taught drawing human anatomy to the participants of Continuing Education Program and oil painting to High School students. Came back in October 2009 and joined the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design. She will also be teaching contemporary Art at the National College of Arts (NCA), in Fall 2010.

During 2006- todate, has been teaching at NCA, PIFD, Punjab University and CEP course at LUMS 2010 Nov till May 2012. She also does her studio practice and keeps exhibiting her works at various places.

Conceptual Drawing Course Outline
This course is intends to let you experience and learn the gist of art, drawing! The flexible and user friendly use of material will help you find your own way of material handling and getting quick result of image-making while you learn to transfer your creative thoughts on paper.
Weekly planner, Painting-I

Week 1: Introduction to drawing and painting. A brief introductory lecture will be delivered (30 minutes). Discussion about the course as where students want to start off from!

Week 2: Pencil Drawing. Understanding forms/shapes while trying various way of using graphite/lead.

Materials: drawing sheet, 10x15 inches, half size drawing board, 4b pencil, 6b and 8b graphite stick. Kneeded eraser, masking tape.

Week 3: Pencil Drawing from obervation. Materials: 6b pencil/graphite stick, charcoal sticks(soft), canson sheet (half), thumb-pins/masking tape, drawing board.

Jahanban Tahir Profile

Jahanban Tahir is currently an Account Director at Latitude Corporate Relationship Solutions and has previously worked for REDC (Rausing Executive Development Center) at LUMS as a Management Trainee. He was responsible for planning and supporting various executive training courses at REDC. He joined Asiatic Public relations as a Client Service Manager and was servicing Coca-Cola. At Coke he managed PR for major campaigns like Coke Ramadan Caravan 2010 and 2011, Coke Cricket Junoon and Sprite Cricket Next 2011 and has co-authored a case study titled "Marketing innovation in the beverage industry" focusing on Coke Studio for Marketing Review Magazine Q2- 2011

He holds an MBA in Marketing from the Lahore School of Economics. Prior to that, Jahanban did his Bachelor's in Mass Communication with majors in Film/Sound and PR from the University of Windsor, Canada. He won the best director award at the university's annual film festival in 2006.

Jahanban has also worked as a producer at a local radio station in Windsor during his stay at the university. He is passionate about films, music, literature and sports. He also takes keen interest in technologies in communication.

In his position as an Account Director at Latitude Jahanban has managed a variety of events such as corporate dinners for CCBPL and the recently held Lahore Literary Festival 2013 amongst numerous others.

Maryyam Khan has a diverse professional background, having managed a collegiate and schools system as well as having represented Pakistan as a diplomat for almost nine years in India and France. She has over 10 years of teaching experience at collegiate and university level. Her primary area of teaching and research is Human Resource Management, in which she has also conducted a number of workshops and trainings. Outside of teaching, she is actively involved in co-curricular and charitable activities. She is currently an external examiner for the School of Management at Forman Christian College and is also a member of the Marketing Association of Pakistan.
